BOOK REVIEW OF "SPLIT SECOND"

There are some books that start with a bang and end in a whimper and vice-versa. Well recently I read this novel called-"Split-Second". I had never heard about it's author David Baldacci before and I was a bit apprehensive about buying the book but I bought it and I really enjoyed the book. It is a thriller and starts with the assassination of a presidential candidate. The book holds the reader's interest till the end and has a brilliantly written climax. I have attached a synopsis of the novel - Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. With heavy reluctance, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air. Living a new life on a quiet lake in Central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He’s been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes. Now, Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean’s case. And he needs a friend -- especially since a series of macabre killings have brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he’s tried hard to forget. As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a shocking truth: that the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making -- and are a long way from over... This post deals with the promises made by the DMK for the forth-coming elections in Tamil Nadu. The list runs something like this-Rice at Rs 2 per kilo, two acres of free land for all farmers, free colour TV sets for those without one, free power for all farmers and weavers, the list goes on. I think it is high time for Karunanidhi to retire from active politics. The problem is that there is no worthy successor to his ideology, Vaiko got cheated and he has moved towards Amma, Captain Vijaykant has floated his own party and is sure to get plenty of votes. As per suveys Jayalalitha is slowly but surely garnering support and is poised to win the elections. Only time will tell..

Pattiyal
A hard-hitting gangster movie with no gimmicks, Vishnuvardhan has done a good job, with a tight screenplay. The movie belongs to Bharat, he plays a mute guy and Arya his friend. It shows the grim and dark world of the Chennai gangwars, and how more youngsters get pulled into the nexus of crime. The movie is inspired from City of Gods and Bangkok Dangerous. Padmapriya and Pooja are the heoines. Guys both heroes die in the end. Rating-Leaves a lump in the throat, but go watch it. 4 out of 5.

This movie generated a lot of hype as it brought together the golden pair of Jayaram and Urvashi after a long gap on the silver scree. Unfortunately the movie is disappointing. Around 10 years back there was a Hindi movie called Judaai, starring Anil Kapoor, Urmila and Sridevi. Well MC is a remake of the same. Mamta Mohandas plays the 'other woman' in this version. The movie has a plethora of comedians and relies on bufoonery to tickle the funny bone. Urvashi is loud and lacks her usual charm, Mamta tries hard to look ravishing, but her acting needs to improve. Songs are decent enough. Jayaram is OK in his role. The movie might break even for its producers. Rating-Watchable, 2 out of 5.

GODFATHER
The promos of Ajit's new movie look smashing. Ajit plays a triple role in the movie of a father and his two sons. Of them one looks like a transvestite. The songs are already a hit, with one very classical number in it. Now it seems that the movie won't release before May. AVM's Tirupati directed by Perarasu might release before Godfather. Ajit fans keep your fingers crossed.

Well the Indian team was well and truly defeated in the Mumbai test by Freddie's inexperienced English team. Our famed batting line-up went down like ninepins with only Sachin managing to score 34 runs. It was a repeat of the final test against Pakistan. Dravid blundered by electing to field first on a batter's pitch, and the Poms scored 400. Now Chappy and Rahul should put on their thinking caps and plan properly to win the one-day series beginning on March 28. A series win against england would boost the Indian morale and our ICC Rankings.
ALL TIME FAVOURITE COMEDY SCENES IN MALAYALAM CINEMA
Hi, everybody was very busy with work, finally got time to post a new topic.
The following is a compilation of my favourite comedy scenes in Malayalam cinema:
In Ramji Rao Speaking , the fight between Mukesh, Saikumar and Innocent and Innocent's expressions when Rekha comes into the compound.
In Natotikkaattu, Mohanlal and Sreenivasan are going for job and on the way they had a fight with someone coming on car. Back to office, they find that the person is the new MD of the office. They wear false beards and specs and come to meet the MD. When MD asks them to remove the specs, Sreenivasan tells "Kannokke Pazhutthu Cheenjirikkukayanu".
In Pattana Pravesham, Mohanlal sits in a hotel, next to NL Balakrishnan. He is having a syringe to collect the blood sample of NL. It is fun to watch the way he uses the syringe with a peculiar inimitable smile.
In Junior Mandrake, Jagathi is admitted to mental hospital and they bury him in ground with only head outside, "as part of the treatment". One patient thinks that his head is a football and hits it. This may seem cruel, but it is difficult not to laugh watching it.
In Vadakku Nokki Yanthram, Sreenivasan, on his wedding night, "climbs" to the bed and suddenly all the flower curtains and all paraphernalia falls down. He tells Parvathi, his wife: "Saramilla Shobhe, Ithokke Sadharanamalle..". The movie, has many other interesting scenes. In a song scene, Sreenivasan takes a wild flower or leaf and smells it romantically, and then he starts itching. In another scene, he is asked whether he needs coffee. His serious reply is: "Ippol Venda, Chilappol Vendi Vannekkum".
In Adhipan, Mohanlal telling Parvathi that her father is their family doctor, not knowing that he is a veterinary doctor. Another scene in which he comes to Parvathi's home and meets her father is also funny.
In Akkare Ninnoru Maran Mala Aravindan comes to attend the interview for a bus conductor post, and he tells few stories to show how honest he is. It is interesting with the background music, and Netumuti's expressions. Another scene, in which Netumuti telling to the visitors that he is fully in debt, thinking that they are IT officers is also good.
In Aram + Aram = Kinnaram, Mohanlal narrating his fictitious encounters with girls and repeatedly asking to the listeners "Njan Athrakku Sundaranano?" Jagadeesh, Mukesh, Asokan and Siddique waiting to meet Geetha Vijayan in In Harihar Nagar. It is interesting to see their faces.
In Arorumariyathe, Netumuti the driver comes back to Madhu's home, after their eventful vacation trip. His facial expressions and Madhu's red face during the scene is really funny.
Sreenivasan disguising as a thief, with oil poured all over his body in Gandhinagar Second Street, so that his friend Mohanlal the false Goorkha can catch the thief.
Mohanlal the teacher taking his first class in school, in Doore Doore Oru Kootu Koottam, and Netumuti telling "Katuppam Alpam Kurakkam".
Jagathi demonstrating his new pants to his mother in Melepparambil Aanveetu. The advertisement in the movie hall in Megham in which Sreenivasan's photograph is shown with a title "Owner Shanmughan".
The scene in which Harisree Asokan is asked to polish all shoes first and then to wash the clothes in an otherwise junk movie Punjabi House.
Sreenivasan describing his job history to Mohanlal in Mukundetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu. He tells he was in "Indian Railways" for few years, and then the scene cuts to one in which he walks over the railway platform wearing a Khaki trouser, with a large trunk box on his head. He tells he was a medical representative for few years, and in the next scene we can see him sitting in the footpath and selling "Karinkurangu Rasayanam".
Jagathy and his wife vacating their flat due to a bomb-scare in CID Moosa. Sainuddeen asking Mammootty "where is the house of Hitler Madhavan Kutty" , and is being hit in Hitler.
Sreenvasan pleading with Mohanlal to take him to the US, and the way Mohanlal responds to it, in Akkareyakkareyakkare. "Sadhanam Kayilundo" scene in Akkareyakkareyakkare.
Letter retrieval scene in Post box no. 27. Suicide rescue in Mookilarajyathil. Thilakan stripping for Swadeshi cloth in Mookilarajyathil.
Mukesh and co. chasing a pregnant woman's car mistaking her to be kidnapped in In Hariharnagar. Collision of Jagadeesh with Geetha's grandfather in In Hariharnagar.
Pant Keeri scene and Jagadheesh's cycle-dive scene in Vandanam. Urvashi kidnapping scene in Mithunam.
Aishwarya kidnapping scene in Butterflies.
Hospital confusion scene in KakaKuyil.
Well guys, this is no where near Priyan's classic. This is an averagely made rekame in the guise of a sequel. Sorry to be rude, but Kavya looks like an amateur Sumo wrestler in the movie and she does not suit the role that Revathi played with so much panache years ago in Kilukkam. This movie brings in most of the characters that appeared in the original. The movie starts with the killing of Vijayaraghavan, Kavya's dad and the mayor of Kochi. She witnesses it and loses her mental balance. Then we have Jayasurya and Harisri Ashokan and Kunjakoboban and Salim Kumar. They land up in Ooty try to kidnap Kavya, then there is a small child and more confusion. The climax is a bit cliched and rude as Innocent, Hanifa, Jagadhi and Salim Kumar appear as women and try to kidnap Kavya. Mohanlal is reduced to a cameo, but has an amazing screen-presence and bashes the baddies in Vijaykant style flying in the air and kicking them to death. Rating-Logicless timepass 2.5 out of 5.
